FENG SHUI MYTHS... IS FENG SHUI SUPERSTITIOUS? MYTH: Feng Shui is magical, religious and filled with mysticism. FACT: The meaning of superstitious is any blindly accepted belief or notion. This hardly describes the whole of Feng Shui. Feng Shui is both an art and a science and is rooted in a beautifully profound and subtle study of environment. Much of Feng Shui can be logically explained and does not require any believe in a particular religion. With the latest developments in Quantum Physics, many of the subtleties of Feng Shui can also be scientifically explained. DIRECTION: (NORTH, SOUTH, EAST AND WEST) MYTH: Everything in a home must be arranged according to global direction and if it is not, bad things can happen. FACT: When Feng Shui was founded over 3,000 years ago, optimizing direction of placement were crucial due to a lack of electricity and modern convenience. Knowing a home facing east would have part of the home warmed from the sun at a certain time of the day and the other part cool in the night, was highly beneficial. This is very logical and understandable, but to try and apply direction in urban areas is often impractical. If we consider the size and shape of our interiors and modern architecture, that often ignores proper placement, furniture arrangements could look quite funny and out of place if all we followed were directional placement. BAGUA MYTH: You must follow the Bagua to the exact degree and if you don't, good things won't happen in those aspects of your life. FACT: The Bagua was created to symbolically recognise direction as well as the balance of the elements. Superimposed on a structure, it allows us to consciously look at the nine most important aspects of life. The Bagua can be superimposed over the entire structure and each individual room to ensure that overall balance is achieved. It is considered to be a guide and aid to empower us, not to restrict us. DRAGONS, TIGERS AND FROGS MYTH: You must live by a mountain the shape of a dragon, your driveway should be shaped like a tiger, if you have a frog with Chinese coins in its mouth, it will bring you lots of money. FACT: These animals, others like them and many traditional Chinese figurines such as the Buddha, Three Wise Men and other symbols are very much rooted in the Chinese cultural story. The power of these symbolisms are rooted in your believe in them. If you cannot resonate and appreciate their meaning, then it is perfectly alright to choose a symbol from your own culture or experience that have a similar meaning. If you do not like these symbols or they feel out of place in your interior, using them is not considered to be good Feng Shui.
